Served as president of the mission. He was released in July 1854 but his transfer of leadership to Daniel Tyler did not officially take place until the mission conference in October of that year.
His family arrived in the United States in 1855 via the ship the Emerald Isle. He served as the company Chaplain during the overland portion of the trip.
