He is the son of John and Jane Scott. He emigrated from England with his parents in 1867, sailing on the ship Manhattan, and arriving in New York on July 4th. Thomas and his brother, William, left Laramie, Wyoming on 1 August 1868, with the William S. Seeley Company. At some point, while crossing, Thomas left the Seeley Company and joined the Daniel McArthur company. A young woman by the name of Louisa Whitehead was in that company, and he married her after arriving in Salt Lake City.
