Thomas was one of the members of the Mormon Battalion that made it all the way to California. His journal indicates that he first began his trip to Utah from California with the Hancock/Hunt/Pace/Lytle company in 1847. However, half way into the journey, he received news that his family had not yet traveled west from Winter Quarters, so he returned to California for the winter.

The following year, he again made his way to Utah from California, departing in July 1848 from Sacramento Valley with thirteen others. They arrived in Salt Lake City on September 8th. Still not finding his family there, he continued East to Winter Quarters.
