Son of John and Emma Ward. Thomas emigrated from England in 1861 via the ship Underwriter which arrived to New York on 21 May 1861. He then continued his westward journey to Utah.

His parents and several of his siblings emigrated in 1864 and traveled westward with the Rawlins Company.
