Thomas Yates
There is some uncertainty in the records for Thomas. He is seen, at age 22, in the New York Passenger Lists, arriving in New York from Liverpool on 19 July 1863 via the ship Antarctic. It appears he was traveling alone though family records indicate his future wife was also on this ship and they married in Council Bluffs before beginning their journey across the plains.
PEF records have two entries for a Thomas Yates, both age 23, recorded on the same date, right next to each other in the ledger, with different amounts and different bond numbers. It is uncertain if these entries were for the same man (perhaps Thomas had to take out a second loan once he and Elizabeth married in Council Bluffs to cover her travel costs) or two different men, with the same name, age and travel times. However, there is no evidence of a second Thomas Yates who was traveling alone in the ship passenger records.
He should not be confused with the Thomas Yates born 25 February 1841, also traveling in 1863 with his mother and siblings. Further research is needed.
