Although he was technically appointed mission president in March 1852, he did not proactively perform in that office until after the departure of John E. Forsgren in December, effectively making them co-presidents for much of 1852.
On 21 August 1853, he died aboard the steamship Transit on the German Ocean, en route from Copenhagen, Denmark to Liverpool, England, and was buried at sea.
