Formerly believed to be "Elder William Evans" who died in on 16 August 1858. The man who died in 1858 was not a member of the Mormon Battalion, and did not serve a mission in the U.S. in 1848. "Elder William Evans" who died in 1858 did not emigrate to the U.S. until 1850.
