William was from England. He crossed the Atlantic on the ship Caravan in 1856 as an 18 year old arriving in New York on 27 March. He was a "Carpet Printer." He was rebaptized on 27 November 1856 at West Jordan, Utah. (In the rebaptism record his name is William H. "Anson.") In the 1856 Utah Territorial census he may be the Wm. Hanson living in the Salt Lake City, 7th Ward and he may be the Wm. "Hansen" of Salt Lake City named in the Utah Territorial Militia records on 4 July 1857.
