Evidence from emigration and genealogical records suggests the Smith family first traveled to Utah in 1852. Further research is needed to determine the name of the company they traveled with.

William later participated as one of the rescuers that were sent out in the winter of 1856 to assist the members of the Church stranded in Wyoming.

When returning from a mission,  William served as Captain of the Guard in the John W. Berry Company in 1858. There were two gentlemen in this company both named William Smith. A "William Smith" is mentioned in the Bullock Journal and a "W. Smith" is mentioned in the Goddard account.
