A secondary source says that Harriet Brandshaw Burton and her family crossed the plains with an "Independent Company" headed by Mark Hall arriving in Salt Lake City in 1851.  Actually, Mark Hall was Captain of the first ten in the Benjamin Gardner Company of 1852.  At the time of the 1860 federal census of Utah William was living in the household of Joseph Race of Tooele (William's mother had married Race.) For a time William lived in Mojave, California where he "kept the station at the first crossing of the river." (see the copy of an L. A. Star newspaper article dated 10 July 1869 in William's memories section in Family Tree. He died in a Los Angeles saloon gun battle in 1869.
