William Hyde received a call to the Southern States Mission in 1880 but instead he and his family were called to settle Fort Montezuma. They arrived in September, 1880 and built the first store in San Juan County. William Hyde served as the branch president of Montezuma until 1883, then moved his family to Colorado in 1884.
