William came to Utah sometime between 1862 and 1864. He likely came in 1862, the year he took a PEF loan for his emigration, and sailed to America on the ship, Manchester, arriving on June 12, 1862 . Further research is needed to narrow the year of his travel. His death certificate said that he was in Utah for 56 years which would make him here in 1864.
His surname is listed as "Goulder" in McArthur's memorandum book, but is listed as "Goulter" in the PEF ward accounts of 1868.
While working as a teamster in the Daniel D. McArthur (1868) Company, William met his wife Maria Pagden. They married after the company's arrival in the Salt Lake Valley in 1868.
