Missionaries were called at a special conference held 28 and 29 August 1852 to serve in China, Siam, Australia, and India. Four people were called to China, but only three traveled from California the following spring, arriving in Hong Kong on 28 April 1853. Hosea Stout presided over the missionary work in Hong Kong. After several weeks, the missionaries felt the area was not ready to receive their message and left to return home on 22 June. Missionaries were once more called to China in April 1853, but none of these actually traveled to the country.
