Asahel Lathrop, Elijah Fuller, and Orrin Porter Rockwell were called to go to California in November 1847. Asahel and Elijah returned to Salt Lake City in May 1848 with "19 persons including five hired Indians." The journey took them 90 days. Orrin did not return with them.
