239 individuals and 54 wagons were in the company when it was organized at the outfitting post at Kanesville, Iowa (present day Council Bluffs). Shortly thereafter, a small group of about 40 people, led by Crandell Dunn, broke off from the main camp and traveled the remaining distance to the Valley independently.
