A small company composed primarily of men left Burlington, Iowa, with 7 wagons in early April. They reached Kanesville, Iowa, near the end of May. They had planned to attach their small company to the James C. Snow company and went to the Elkhorn to wait for them. After waiting for some time, they proceeded ahead on their own. Upon catching up to the Robert Wimmer company, it was decided that 20 wagons from Wimmer's company would combine with Black's small company to continue on to Utah.
