one of the Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, was the fifth son of Peter Whitmer Sr. and Mary Musselman,born Sep. 27, 1809, in Fayetter, Seneca county, New York,friend of the Prophet Joseph,baptized by Oliver Cowdery in Seneca lake, June, 1829,called by revelation to a mission with Oliver Cowdery to the Lamanites, Sept. 1830,as a missionary helped raise up a large branch in Kirtland, Ohio,traveled nearly one thousand miles through mud and snow, mostly on foot, to Jackson county, Missouri, arriving in the early part of 1831,while other missionaries preached among the Lamanites, he and his companion remained in Independence, employed as tailors, until the arrival of Joseph Smith and a number of the brethren the following July,ordained a High Priest, Oct. 25, 1831, by Oliver Cowdery,suffered with the Saints during the Jackson county persecutions in 1833, and was among those who found a temporary home in Clay county,took sick and died on a farm about two miles from Liberty, Clay county, Sep. 22, 1836,like all the other witnesses to the Book of Mormon, Peter Whitmer, jun. was true and faithful to his testimony till the last.
