In Ann Horrocks’ own words from a personal history sheet.

My mother died when I was eleven years old.  We left England on board the ship “George Washington” for America March 1857.  We arrived at Boston April 1857, came to Iowa from Boston and camped there about three weeks making preparations for crossing the plains.  We arrived at Salt lake City, Utah about 10 October 1857.

[We] came to Ogden the same day and made a brief stay and returned to Salt Lake where I made my home until just before “the move South” [ because of the  Utah War] when I returned to Ogden and accompanied my father on “the move south”.

My first child was born April 1863.  My father was killed in a snow slide in Ogden Canyon 10 Mar 1865.  I am the mother of 8 boys and 2 girls.

I have resided in Ogden since I was married and have been a member of the First Ward ever since it was organized and acted as a teacher sometimes.

I walked most of the way across the plains and waded the Platte River while others hung on behind the wagons.  One morning while helping father yoke the oxen, the cattle stampeded and wagons were broken and two people were killed.  Several were injured.  Jesse B. Martin was our captain of 30 wagons and Brother Dow (?)  Was captain of ten.  I lived 5 years in Sugar City, Idaho during my married life.
