Transcript for Brown, John, Autobiographical sketch [n.d.], fd. 1, 54

We fitted out the Emigration that season 1853 at Keokuck [Keokuk,] Iowa.

I took charge of the rear company all English saints. I had a time with them across Iowa & the plains, with unbroken cattle & inexperienced teamsters.

Most of them from factories & cotton mills of England & had never seen a yoke of cattle in their lives. It made a hard Summers work for me.

We arrived in Salt Lake the 15 of Oct. 1853.
