Transcript for Carter, Thomas, Autobiographical sketch, 1
We sailed in the ship called Golconder [Golconda], to the city of New Orleans, arriving January 23, 1853. I came in what was called the ten pound company. We came up the river to Heocock [Keokuk] share we stopped and made an outfit, both cattle and wagons for crossing the plains. Provisions and other things necesary for our trip, Joseph Young being our captain. During our stay in Heocock, I got acquainted with a young woman by the name of Mary Ann Goble, she belonging to the same company. She came from Brighton, England.
When I started on the plains, I started with an ox team, which I drove all the way to Salt Lake City, feel thankful for the experience I gained while crossing the plains. I almost forget to state that I was married before reaching Salt Lake City. I was married at Fort Larimeby [Laramie], our chaplin by the name of Roston. We arrived in Salt Lake City on the 12 October, 1853. We was led to the Public Square where we camped for several days . . . .
