Correspondence

March 27th 1871

Editor, Deseret News – Yesterday morning, at 10 a.m., I assembled with a number of the citizens of Mill Creek Ward, to pay the last tribute of respect to Brother Thomas M. Howard, son of Thomas Howard, paper maker.

The young man was but a little over 23 years of age, when he died, but through his kind deportment to his parents and all his associations, he had won the love and good will of all who knew him.

He was bugler of the Cavalry Company of Mill Creek and many of the Company turned out to attend his funeral.  The procession showed the genuine love and brotherhood that alone can be found among the boys of Utah, who have ordained in companies of Home Guards and Militia.

Brother Howard was a young man of sterling integrity to the cause of Truth, and of exemplary habits, and being always hale and hearty, his sudden demise brought a gloom to the heart of everyone who knew him, being stricken down with inflammation of the lungs in the short space of five days.  He passed from his parents and friends to join the hosts of the redeemed.  D.G.
