12. Edward Martin was the leader of the handcart company.

[4.Who came with you on the handcart company?]
4. My father and mother and six children started. Three died of hunger on the way.
[5. How did you pay for your journey from England to Salt Lake City?]
5. We had no money. We were brought over by the Perpetual Emigration Fund.
[8. What was your starting place?]
8. Florence, Nebraska. Left England in May and stopped a month in Florence while they made handcarts for us. We arrived in Salt Lake City Nov. 31 [30] 1856.
[9. When did you start?]
9. About June 30.
[10. Why were you so late arriving in Salt Lake City?]
10. Winter set in a month earlier than usual.

21. There was a shortage of food because the handcarts couldn’t carry much food. The company counted on supplementing their supply at Fort Bridger and other points along the way and were disappointed.
[23. What was the reason for the disaster of the Martin Handcart Company?]
23. The unusually early winter was blamed.

24. As soon as word of our plight was received President Brigham Young sent out a wagon train loaded with provisions to bring us in.
