1860 [June] 1. Attended meeting in the bowery[.] spoke to the congregation (W Russell drowned)

2. the company met in the morning at the Warehouse and "rolled out" to the Florence Camping ground. Went down in the evening and took tea with my wife. Also slept in the camp at night[.] Was employed in the office assisting in clerking for Brot[her]. Cannon & the Hand Cart Co.

3. Still Clerking. The camp would have moved out to Little Papillion to day but that a heavy thunderstorm came on in the evening. Slept in Warehouse with Brot[her]s Q. Cannon & Eardley.

4. 7 miles[.] The Camp moved out to Little Papillion[.] A messenger arrived at the office in the evening announcing the arrival of Elders Lyman & Rich with a number of Mountain brethren at the Camp. Brots Cannon & Smith, Ross &c moved up here and Bro Eardley & myself staid writing and making out [Ac.or]. slept at my old place. Bro Croston.

5. 9 miles[.] Moved out to Camp. Transacted church business[.] attended meeting and heard Elders Lyman[,] Rich & Cannon discourse on practical Mormonism very ably. In the afternoon the camp moved out to Spring Creek. On the other side of the creek to that where we <en>camped Brot Sam H Smith (Son of [- -B] with a number of others encamped (en route as missionaries)

9. Col. Robt L. June 12. Col. Ross commanded 100 men satisfied that Judd Smith was killed by a ball from [text in Pitman shorthand] opponents [text in Pitman shorthand] know [text in Pitman shorthand] any one prisoner.

6. July, 1860 Travelled 10 miles to Sandy Bluffs[.] had fellowship meeting—moderate Cg place. passed Bluff creek[.] small [-] Bluff springs (dined) goose cr[ee]k, Sandy bluffs, (passed spring—6 miles, [2 m mtn] spring.

7. Left East End of Sandy Bluffs and travelled to Petite Creek. good spring water boiling upon the sand about 100 yds[-] from road[.] good grass[.] weeds & buffalo chips, but swarming with mosquitoes. The people had scarcely any sleep in consequence.

8. Left 30 past 4 a.m. had [text in Pitman shorthand] thro' Duck Creek, Shoal Stream, Rattlesnake Creek, Inlet Creek joins the river (dined) and after passing several little creeks arrived at Camp Creek. good water, grass & chips. A very wet evening.

9. Left 7 a.m. Travelled thro Narrow Creek. 3 ft. Wolf Creek 20 ft. very sandy bluffs[,] Watch Creek, very high bluffs gray sandy, bad to asand [ascend].

10. Passed onto Castle Creek. Later [blank space] was confined of a [blank space] in consequence of which we were detained until the following morning[.] The first part of the road was exceedingly difficult. road best round left side of the hill.

11. 17 ms Sand Hill Creek South Side road safe wide. 9 miles further a bad slough. The road leads off to Dry Creek, but by taking a new route to the left, you come to a good camping place by the river side

12. 10 m. Passed several small water Creeks and some dry ones[,] roads a little sandy. Camped at Crab Creek a very nice little stream of good pure water.

13. —23 m—Started at 4 a.m. travelled 2 sandy. Dined Cobble Hills [west] foot 8 m.

16. —19 m—Low Sandy Bluffs East foot 12 m. (d[ined]) 7 miles further encamped [text in Pitman shorthand] bad camp place. By turning off the road 2 or 3 hundred yards 3 miles further (soon after ascend & desc steep sandy bluff) instead [-] good grass may be found & water obtained from the Platte.

17. Chimney Rock [.] a most beautiful scenery is here exhibited, the prospect charming[,] a beautiful site for a city (with this exception) no timber. Travel 2 miles to the South on a new track[.] after passing C. R. 5 m. good camping

one Bluff wind, like old castles &c. &c. North side of road extending [-] miles.

on Bluffs can see Chimney Rock a little road joins river (good camp 13 m).[blank space July 19 through 21]

22. Travelled on to the Black Hills on grass in a valley to the left and water.

23. In ascending the highest mountain on the range I had to double teams coming down, Brot. Midle & Ordidges Cart broke[.] they sold the wheels for $8 value in flour[.] Encamped at the river and send out provisions due Sat 7 last.

24. 18 m. Travelled to a bottom in the hills[.] some grass had not first rate quality[,] plenty of timber, but no water excepting in wet seasons[.] 1½ mile further to AlderClump. There is a beautiful valley surrounded by bluffs some 20 ft high. 2 cold springs of water & plenty of timber. In the afternoon on to Deep Creek[.] guide says 5 mi but think it 8 m.

25. Traveled from Deep Creek on to the River[.] on again to the river & encamped (guide ref distance 12 m 8& 4, but Capt Browns Co [-] Tour own[.] both consider it 14 & 5 = 19 miles[.] roads tolerably good

good cedar wood—the top of one of which we encamped on a spring to the right. Cold & good

26. Travelled on & encamped near the river. 9 m.—1 mile further is a beautiful camping ground, grass, wood & water plentiful. In the afternoon on again to Camp ground some mile or 1½ from river. Sapwood plenty. grass tolerably good. Sunday [1869 Promise, Ogden Valley School

28 Travelled to a very nice Camping ground near the river.

In the evening by turning down a camping ground and passing thro a cluster of trees through which the road is only suffic[ient]ly wide to admit a wagon to pass came to a beautiful camp ground surrounded by trees (dry on river side)[,] water filters thru' sand & is good).
