Transcript for Hayes, Alma, "A History of Patriarch Alma Hayes," [1]

In 1852 my uncle John W. Hess, took Nephi and I into his care and brought us across the plains to Utah. We walked barefooted and bareheaded all the way from the Mississippi River to Provo, with the exception of the few times when we were permitted to ride in the wagons as we crossed the streams. Being of a tender age of six and my brother only eight, we found the night a welcome peace from the long exhausting walk of the day.
