Staid [stayed] in Winter Quarters two weeks then crossed the Missouri to Council Bluffs named Kanesville in honor of Thomas Lathrop Kane[.] Staid one year. September 30 in 1848 our eldest child Lucy Hellen [Williams] was Born. Left the 4th of July 1849 With ox a[nd] cow teams 2 wagon(s) 5 in family. Dr. E[zra]. G[ranger]. [Williams,] Mrs. Eliza[Henrietta Elizabeth Crombie Williams,] Dr's Mother Mrs. Frederick G. Williams & an adopted son of the Dr's sister Lovina Riggs. named James Goddard. 10 years old. Journey'd to the Salt Lake valley. arriving in the valley 28th of October 1849. Our Daughter being 13 month(s) old. Healthy a[nd] well after having the Hooping Cough on the Journey. her Father bought a pony for me to ride up the Big a[nd] Little Mountain[s] & carry her in my arms in the saddle. the mountain was too steep the saddle slipple [slipped] sidewards and backwards. Causing me to give up the Effort and Carry her in my Arms up the Steep Ascent. Stopping to take Breath & look at the teams tugging the wagons up Hill. While the ground would Roll from under our feet a[nd] the teamsters would Call out dont throw your gravel down here. When once on top sat down to Look into the Beautiful valley. next Day Sunday Entered Salt Lake City.
