21 Sep 1839: Elder George A. Smith, Reuben Hedlock, and Theodore Turley left Commerce and started for England; 17 Oct 1839: Elders Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, George A. Smith, Reuben Hedlock and Theodore Turley arrived at Terre Haute in very sick condition. Smith, Hedlock and Turley stayed at Brother Nahum Milton Stow's and Kimball and Young stayed at Dr Modisett's.22 Nov 1839: Elders Young, Kimball, Smith and Hedlock "left Kirtland, Ohio, and proceeded to Fairport, but the lake was so rough that no boat came into port, until the 26th."9 Mar 1840: " Elder Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt, Orson Pratt, George A. Smith, and Reuben Hedlock sailed from New York on the Patrick Henry for Liverpool. Elder Pratt wrote that they "had a rough passage of twenty-eight days, and on the sixth of April landed in Liverpool, England."
