Organization of Company

In the evening of July 28, 1862, met on camp ground near Florence, N. T. [Nebraska Territory], and were called to order by Elder Jos. W. Young.

Prayer by Elder Amasa Lyman.

After a few appropriate remarks by Elder Young, on

On Motion <by> I[saac]. A. Canfield was unanimously chosen Captain of the company.

On motion, W.C. Neal was <unanimously> chosen Sergeant of Guard.

On motion, James McKnight was unanimously chosen <to act as> Chaplain and Clerk. On motion, Christopher Dixon was chosen Captain of First Ten.

Elders Lyman, Rich and Young made a few appropriate remarks.

On motion, J. Milus [Milan] Russell was unanimously chosen Captain of Third Ten.

On motion it was agreed to buy Capt. Canfield a riding animal.

On motion <resolved that> the assessment for said animal be raised from an apportionment of the number of teams owned by each person.

Br. D. Minkler volunteered to advance the money for Capt. s [Capt's] <riding> animal.

Wednesday, July 30

Removed our camp <onto Spring Creek 3 miles further from Florence> Some animals not yet found. Brethren bringing some needed articles omitted.

Singing and prayer in morning and at night [sentence unfinished] Having accompanied br. Minkler to Elder - T. McAllister's Church camp to get some teamsters for awhile obtained permistion [permission] of Bishop E. H. Blackburn,

Engaged brs. James Taylor, John McAvoy and Benjamin Harris [Farrar] as teamsters—the former two from church camp.

At eve singing, and prayer by Jos. Stickney. Severe rain storm during night.

Friday Aug. 1.

Camp moved by horn at 5½ a[.]m.

After breakfast, singing and prayer by br. J[ackson].J.M. Butler.

Rolled on <8 miles> and nooned at Great Papillon. Steep river banks—bad watering. Grass abundant. Some willows.

Camped at Reed's Ranch 3 m further.

Severe rain storm during night.

Saturday, Aug. 2.

Camp called at 6 a.m.

Breakfast. Singing, and prayer by br. John R. Young, who visited our camp on business.

Rolled on to Elkhorn bridge, 8 m. Fine breeze kept off the mosquitoes abounding here. Wood and water plenty, but not the best feed for animals. Axletree broke by br [William] Dalling [Dallin]. Repaired—new axle—better than old one.

At eve, singing, and prayer by br J. Minkler.

Sunday Aug. 3.

Camp called at 6 a.m.

After breakfast, camp convened in grove, near camp. Singing, and prayer by br. [sentence unfinished]

Captain gave some directions regarding observance of Sabbath, interdicting, hunting, fishing, &c Advised all but the guards to stay in or near camp, when we rested on that day, which would be done whenever consistent.

Chaplain requested a prompt and general attendance at camp devotions.

Hitched up and moved over to Rawhide creek, 3 m. Water poor, wood scarce. Feed good. Capt. Ansil Harmon's church train camped on Elkhorn, within a mile of us.

Spread large awning and held meeting at 6 p.m.

Singing, and prayer by Chaplain.

Remarks by Capt.Canfield, Elder J.J.M. Butler and Chaplain[.] Profane swearing and cruelty to animals deprecated. Obedience and resignation to the will and providence of God and counsels of His servants urged.

Monday, Aug. 4.

Camp called at 4½ a.m.

At usual time, singing and prayer by br. Wm. Dallin.

Moved on to a mile beyond Fremont. Unhitched in road. Capt. Harman's Co. corralled little way before us—good place—fine feed, wood and water .

After dinner rolled on some 5 miles and camped ½ mile from river and fine feed—wood and water distant. Flies very annoying to-day. Traveled about 16 m.

Tuesday Aug. 5.

Camp called at 5 am.

Singing, and prayer by br. [----] Fawcett at usual time.

Capt. earnestly requested the guard not to be found sitting, lying, or sleeping while on duty.

Camp moved about 8 a.m. Nooned on Platte, about 15 m above Fremont, at Matthew Cotterall's—8 m.

Camped on Platte <7 miles> above North Bend.

Wednesday. 6.

Camp called at 4½. Breakfast. Assembled for <morning> prayers. Singing, Prayer by br. John McAvoy.

Nooned at Lake, 5½ miles above Shell creek. Camped on Platte. Day's travel 14½ m.

At eve, Singing and prayer by br. Ja[me]s Brewer. Lovely moonlight night.

Thursday, Aug. 7.

Camp moved at 4½ a.m.

Singing:[&] prayer by br. John Wagstaff.

Thro' inadvertency of guard <coming into camp> this morning after daylight, our herd damaged farmer's corn, melon and broom patches to amount of 5$ which we promptly paid—to be charged to guard.

Under motion about 7 a.m. Reached <Loop Fork> ferry about 2 miles above Columbus, at noon and at once commenced, crossing. At night five wagons remained on other side.

Singing: prayer by Chaplain.

Capt. made some remarks; after which it was resolved that the guard should remain with the cattle in the morning till relieved from camp by those who had breakfasted.

Friday, Aug. 8.

Camp aroused at day dawn.

Remainder of the wagons brought over, after which rolled on some six miles and, stopping about 15 minutes in the road, took luncheon. Went on three miles further, where road joined the Platte, and watered our teams. Camped at Prairie creek 12 miles from Loup Fork crossing. Excellent water good feed, not much water. For ferrying our 32 wagons and oxen we paid $ [….]—40 c per wagon and 10c for extra yoke oxen. Decamped about 11 a.m. [three sentences] Day's travel 12 m.

At evening, singing and prayer by br. Sam'l Blackham.

James Taylor, Joseph Elbert W. Stickney and Henry Minkler were chosen as special guard—to take charge of the cattle at evening as soon as unyoked and <at> morn to relieve the regular guard—and to be exempt from other guard duty.

Saturday, Aug. 9.

Camp rolled at daybreak.

Morning directions as usual.

Route much alongside Platte. Nooned on Platte. Camped at Western Stage Co's Station. Good place. Day's travel 16 m.

Evening, Singing, Prayer by Capt. Canfield. By request, Elder Wm. Dallin, returning from mission to England, addressed the camp. Was followed by br. Sam'l Black—also by the Chaplain and Capt. Benediction by Elder Dallin.

Severe rain, thunder, lightning and wind storm—for a part of night.

Sunday. 10.

Storm delayed our movements.

Usual camp devotions.Camped on Platte, 2½ miles below Lone Tree. Eve. Singing and prayers by W.C. Dixon. Remarks by br. J.J.M. Butler, Al. Stickney and Capt.

Monday Aug 11.

Camp called at 4 a.m. Lovely morn. Devotions at 6. Prayer by Ed[ward]. Parry

In motion at 7.10. Camped at Cottonwood Grove, near house <on Platte> vicinity of Wood river. Slough water. Good feed. Wood plenty. Traveled 16 m. Road <rather> he<a>vy.

Tuesday, 12.

Camp called at 3½ a.m.

At 6, singing, and prayer by br. Wm. Bloomfield.

Decamped at 7. Nooned after traveling 9 miles, on branch of Platte, opposite Grand Is. Capt. Harmon camped <nooned> just below us.

Crossed Wood river without accident and camped on its banks.

Traveled 18 m. Capt Harmon camped just above. Evening. Singing and prayer by bro. S. Minkler.

Chaplain spoke of the necessity of public and private prayers.

Wednesday Aug. 13.

Camp aroused at 3½ a.m. Called together before breakfast. Sung: O come come away, from northern Posts retiring: Prayer by br. O[wen]. Isom

Rolled on some five <eight> miles to a pleasant spot on Wood river and camped. Short feed: marvelous water. Rolled on again about noon. Camped about 2 miles above Johnsons (now Peck's) on banks of Wood river. Plenty short grass. Eve. Singing, Prayer by br Sam'l Blackham. Night cool and windy.

Thursday, 14.

Camp called at 3½ <a.m.> Fine morn for traveling. Camp devotions, as usual, after breakfast. Prayer by br. John McAvoy. Cattle called for at6. Nooned 3 m below Ft. Kearney <Platte> crossing. Three of the <high> boxes in a Michigan wagon of br. Minkler being broken, Chaplain accompanied him across to Ft. Kearney . Thence to Kearney City to get other boxes which were with difficulty and much expense obtained paying $5 for two bed boxes per and were detained at Kearney city all night—Camping with br. James Taylor.

Friday 15. Aug.

Chaplain and br. M. taking south side up river & crossed Platte at Tom Keelers and joined camp about 11 a.m. Camp waited. Some apprehensions for their safety <Capt Harman's Co passed on while ours was in waiting.> Rolled on some 5 miles, p.m. Eve. Singing, and prayer by br. J[ames]. Forsyth.

Saturday. 16.

Camp aroused at daybreak. Mosquitoes troublesome. Singing and prayer by Matthew Pickett. Nooned after 9 m travel on roadside[,] good feed[,] the yoking cattle. Crossed Elm creek, 4 mi on bridge. Camped on banks of slough at <new> lower crossing Buffalo creek, 5 m. Days journey, 18 m Sin[g]ing and prayer at eve. by br John Wagstaff.

Sunday. 17.

Camp aft horned at 3½ a.m Hasty breakfast. Morn prayer by br. Wm. MacFarlin. Under motion at 6½ . Rolled on 14½ m, then beyond where road nears Platte. Fine feed. Cooling breeze. Half mile from river. Camp met at 5. Eve. Singing and prayer by Capt. Canfield. Remarks by br. Wm. McFarlin, Chaplain and Captains.

Monday Aug. 18.

Camp rolled at 4 a.m. Singing and prayer by br. Geo. Jacklin. Underway at 6 a.m. Camped near the Platte, after drive of some 11 m, in good feed. Day pleasant for traveling. Horn sounded for meeting at 5 PM. Singing, and prayer by br. J.J. M. Butler. Capt. Canfield gave some general instructions and warning against Indian and other assaults. Recommended two at a time, instead of one, for camp guard. Four at a time are called for cattle guard—evening and morning watches. Clerk presented financial matters.

Tuesday. 19.

Camp called at 3½ . Devotions at 6. Prayer by br. Geo. Isom. In motion at 6½. Nooned ½ m from Platte, in good feed, having traveled about 12 m. Camped, 6 m further, on Platte. Good feed. Day <was> favorable for travel.

Wednesday. Aug. 20.

Camp roused at 3½. Devotions at 6. Prayer by br. Sam'l Blackham. Rolled out at 6.40. Cool cloudy. Road somewhat sandy and heavy. Traveled some 9 m and nooned near Skunk creek, 2 m above low Sandy bluffs extending to river. Showery. Camped our last crossing Skunk creek—7 m further. Day's travel, 16 m—286½ m from Florence, N.T.

Evening Singing "We'll see Joseph Smith and Hyrum".

Prayer by br. J.J. M. Butler. Capt. and Chaplain spoke against killing the snakes on the road and exhorted the brethren to diligently cherish the spirit of peace.

Thursday. 21.

Morn cool. Heavy Dew. Camp awakened at 4 a.m. Singing. "The Morning breaks". Prayer by br. Jas. Taylor[.] Nooned at Cold Spring, head of Pawnee Swamp at 7 m. Camped on Platte 9 m further <near "last timber on north side"> 18 m day's travel. 303 m <from Florence>. Eve. Sing "Glorious things", &tc. Prayer by Wm. Dallin

Friday. 22.

Camp called at 4 a.m. Showery. In time as usual after breakfast. Sung "Redeemer of Israel". Prayer by Edw[ard]. M[cGregor]. Patterson. In motion at 7½ . Delayed by intention to get wood for use with buffalo chips during next 200 m. without timber. Too deep water—wood on island. Rolled on some 6 m and camped on Platte banks <½ m above "wide, deep creek".> Wood obtained on island near. Road travelling along Platte. Some fixing wagons. Sun excessively hot. At this point we are 309 m from Florence.

Eve. pleasantly cool. Sung "Away, away to the mountain dell." Prayer by br. Horace Stannard. Remarks on duty of camp[,] prayers, <&tc> by Chaplain and Captain.

Saturday. Aug. 23.

Camp aroused at 3½ . Prayer at ¼ 6, by br. Davis of Capt: A. Harmon's camp. Rolled out at 6:30 a.m. Travelled 11 m and nooned on North Bluff Fork. Roads rather heavy. Light feed. No wood. Some buffalo chips. Camped at "Sandy Bluffs west foot," 6 m further. Good feed. No water. Swamp between us and river. Visited by several Sioux Indians and Squaws. Gave them some 50 lbs flour, suger and traded flour for moccasins. Eve. prayer by br. John Wagstaff.

Sunday 24.

Camp awakened at daybreak. Hitched up and rolled on about 2 m to a dugout spring at head of marsh where turned out and breakfasted. Prayer by br J. Parry. Camped on Bluff creek, about 4 m further. Road very heavy over sand bluffs. Day's journey about 6 m. Evening Meeting. Sung."Praise to the Man" &tc. Prayer by br J.C. Stickney. Remarks by bro. Edw. Parry & Minkler, Jas. Taylor, C[hristopher Flintoff]. Dixon, Chaplain and Captain. The tens of the Co. respectively are hereafter <alternately> to drive in the cattle morn and eve.

Monday, Aug. 25.

Camp aroused at 4 a.m. Prayer at 6, by br. Leon[ard] Floyd. In motion at 7. Road mainly good—some sand marsh and crossed Bluff spring . Nooned on Platte—no feed near. Windy, but pleasant, No buffalo seen as yet. Indians report them far to the south. Tens alternately to drive in the cattle, morn and eve. Camped on Platte. Old wagon in which br Dallin was freighting tinners are broke down several times causing some delay. Eve. Sung "Farewell all earthly honors." Prayer by br. [Ira] Frick [Fisk]. Days travel about 11 m.

Tuesday 26.

Camp roused at 4. Chaplain disabled by pain and swelling in the groin, fever &tc. Capt officiated. At 6 a.m. prayer by br Dallin. Rolling at 7:30. Nooned on small creek nearly opposite Cedar Bluffs. Many small creeks in this vicinity <343 m from Florence> "Petite", "Picannini <½ m further> "Goose" <¼ m> "Spring" <3/4 m> "Small"<1½ m> "Duckwood" <¼> Shoal Stream" & "Rattlesnake" <8¼ m> to p.m. Camped on Platte. Day's travel 11 m. Eve. Sung: "O, Stop and Tell me Redman". Prayer by br J.J.M. Butler. Decided finally to change lead teamsters.

Wednesday. Aug. 27.

Camp aroused at 4. Chaplain still confined to his wagon. Prayer at 6, by br Dallin. Rolled out at 7 a.m. 2d Ten in lead. Nooned on Platte near Wolf creek. Doubled teams up Sand hill <(worst on road)> across Wolf Creek onto and past 2 bluffs, ¾ m. Camped near <a> foot of bluffs, near Platte. Traveled 11¾ m. Eve: prayer by br. Matthew Pickett.

Thursday. 28

Camp awakened at 4. Morn devotions at 6. Rolled out at ¼ 7. Third Ten in lead. Nooned on Platte, opposite Oak Hollow, having traveled over Road good but little sand. Camped opposite Castle Bluffs. road good. Day's travel, 18 m. Eve: Sung"Ye God that others worship". Prayer by br Jas [John] P[rice]. Ball. Remarks by W Dallin, Pickett and Capt. Benediction by Chaplain, still disabled but improving.

Friday. Aug. 29.

Camp called at 3 1/4. Prayer at ¼ 6, by br Butler. Rolled out at 6½. Traveled some 10 m and turned out in green feed, without water, being several miles from Platte—no creeks this side Crab creek, 12 or 15 m distant. Good road exc. 3/4 mile sand. Warm. Road touched Platte. Slight dist. from nooning. Watered animals. About sundown camped on Platte <about a mile below Crab creek> having traveled 18 m. Eve. Sung, "Now let us rejoice" Prayer by br Wm.McFarlin.

Saturday. 30.

Camp called at 3½. Morn devotions at ¼ 6. Prayer by br. Sam'l Blackham. Rolling at 6.30. Heavy dew. Nooned opposite "Ancient Bluff Ruins", having traveled about 12 m. Camped on river, about sundown. Day's travel, about 18 m. Some heavy sand. 24 m below Chimney Rock.

Bro J.W. Young, H.S. Eldredge, A. Lyman, C.C. Rich, W.H. Hooper, E.H. Blackham, J. Brown, G.J. Taylor, M. Lyman, Jos. Rich. with two or three others drove into camp with us having five fine horse <covered> vehicle. Invitations to supper extended to them all by brethren of our camp. Eve: Sung. "Awake ye that slumber". Prayer by br Blackburn [Blackham]. Remarks by br. Jos. W. Young and E.H. Blackham on duties of Saints. Benediction by br Jos. Rich. Clerk finished Schedule of Company, embracing names, ages <dates> residence and oxen, horses & mules & 9 young stock in company.

Sunday. Aug. 31.

Camp called at daybreak. Our visitors took leave soon after, <expecting to reach S.L. City in two weeks.> At 6½, prayer by br. J. Forsyth. Rolled out about 8 a.m. Nooned on Platte. Windy. Camped on Platte. Day's travel about 12 m. Chaplain quite sick. Eve. prayer by br J. Forsyth.

Monday Sept. 1.

Camp called at 4 am. Prayer at 6 by br. O. Isom. In motion at 6½ a.m. Road good, along Platte. Nooned on Platte and nearly opposite Chimney Rock, 41 m below Ft. Laramie. Camped, about sundown, 1½ mile from Platte. Days travel, about 16 m. Eve. Prayer by br. Butler. Chaplain confined to wagon. Capt. absent.

Tuesday. 2.

Camp aroused at 4 a.m. Sung" Come, come ye Saints." Prayer <at 6.44> by br. L[eonard]. Floyd. In motion at 7½ . Chaplain still confined to wagon. Nooned on Platte, having traveled some 10 mi. Road good. Tire broke about 2 m below Scotts Bluffs, and after some hours waiting <(Capt. being ahead)> turned into camp near [illegible] wagon and near a mile from river. Eve. Singing, and prayer by br Ira Fisk. Lovely moonlight night.

Wednesday Sept. 3.

Camp called at 4.30. Bro. Cha[rle]s. Wightman, blacksmith, having put up his portable forge, commenced setting tires and doing other needed repairing. Prayer at 7 am. by br. Pickett. Rolled on at 9.35. Road good. Traveled on Platte <Spring creek,>. At 1.30 p.m., having traveled about 8 mi. About dusk, hitched up and rolled on some two miles. Days travel about 10 mi. Eve. prayer by br [John] Bloomfield.

Thursday. 4.

Camp called at 4 a.m. Slight sprinkle, after great effort at rain. Cool. Prayer <at 6.20> by br. Jas. [John] P. Ball. Rolled out at 8¼, having been delayed by ox missing; found. Nooned on Platte, after traveling about 8 m. P.M. raining and cool. Remained in camp. Eve. Singing, and prayer, br. [Peter] McFarlin [McFarlane].

Friday. 5.

Camp called at ¼ 4, a.m. Cool. Rainy. Met under br. Dixon's large awning. Chaplain out. Sung. "Wake, O wake the world from sleeping." Prayer by Capt. Canfield. Remarks by Chaplain and br. Butler. Doctored disabled animals. Clearing a little, drove on at ¼ 11 some 4 m and nooned on Platte. Camped near timber on N. side river. Days travel about 11 m. Eve. Cool and damp. Sioux in camp. Eve. Singing, and prayer by Chaplain.

Saturday, Sept. 6.

Camp roused at 4.30. Misty and cool. Morn prayer by br. C. Dixon. Rolled at ¼ 8. Nooned on road, distant from river, having traveled some 9 m. Camped on Platte, some 6 m below Ft. Laramie. Poor feed. Eve: Sung, "I live for those who love me." Prayer by br J.J. M.Butler.

Sunday. 7.

Camp rolled at 4½ . Cool. Prayer at ¼ 7. by br. J. McAvoy. Moved at 8 a.m. Chaplain crossed Platte, visited Ft. Laramie. was courteously treated, particularly by Mr. Wm. G. Bullock of Va. Mailed and obtained letters and bought supplies. Nooned opposite the Fort. Camped on Platte, 6 m above Ft. north side some bretheren preparing for coal pit. Sisters washing. Eve: Sung. "O stop and tell me, Redman." Prayer by br. Jas. Taylor. Remarks by br. Jas. Forsyth, Chaplain and Captain.

Monday, 8.

Camp roused at 5. Blacksmith repairing wagons, &c, women washing. Prayer at 8, by br.[William] Dallin. Warm. Crossed Platte and rolled on 5 m, by moonlight, where camped. Singing and prayer as usual. Chaplain feeble—not out in eve. at prayer.

Tuesday, 9.

Camp called at 4. Singing, and prayer by br. Brewer. Moved at ¼ 8. Sun hot. Nooned on road. Camped in Little Cottonwood. Day's travel, 17 m. Eve. Singing and prayer by br. Sam'l Blackham.

Wednesday, 10.

Camp called at 3 a.m. Cool. Prayers 1/46. Under motion at 6.30. Nooned on road, at Horse Shoe creek—dry. 11 m. Stations deserted, since transfer of mail service to Denver rate. Camped at bend of Platte. Good feed across . Cattle went over without leave. Swimming. Days travel, 20 m. Eve: Singing, and prayer by br. Edw'd Parry. Remarks by brs J. McAvoy and Wm. Dallin. Night Cool.

Thursday, 11.

Camp aroused at 4.30. Usual devotions at ¼ 7. Moved at 7½. Made 8 m and nooned on Platte. Forded without difficulty. Rolled on 16 m further and camped. Days travel, 24 m. Eve. Singing and prayer by M. Pickett.

Friday. 12.

Camp roused at 5. Singing and prayer by br. O. Isom. Moved on about 8. Forded Platte in 6 m. Heavy hauling. Camped on opposite bank. Rainy. Fair feed near camp. Eve. Singing and prayer by br. Butler. Remarks by brs. Butler, Ball, Chaplain and Captain.

Saturday, 13.

Camp called at 4½. Singing, and prayer by br. McAvoy. Raining. Meeting of brethren at 11.30. On motion. Night cattle guard was reduced to two at a time, <W[illiam].C[ooley]. Neal opposing.> On motion, each male adult, two at a time, was to be called as an extra day <cattle> guard. Godbe's Co[.] crossed river about noon, including the Bates wagons. After dinner, at 1.30, rolled on about 9 m to secluded spot in river bottom and camped. Eve. Singing, and prayer by br. [David] Minkler. Drizzling.

Sunday, 14

Camp called at 5½ . New arrangement on bell rung for prayer fifteen minutes after first bell. Sung: "O my Father". Prayer by br. Wagstaff. Drizzling. Rolled out at 7½ . Nooned on road after 7 mi travel. Camped 3 m below Deer creek. Eve: Singing, and prayer by br. Ball. <Raining.>

Monday, 15.

Camp called at 5.30. Prayer by br. Forsyth. Broke camp about 10 a.m. and rolled on to Deer creek, where nooned—some of the bretheren trading flour for buffalo robes &c Camped, about 8 m further, on <high> hill side above Platte—many gulches—cattle scattered—Chaplain <till late hour> engaged in getting them together. No camp devotions tonight.

Tuesday, 16.

Camp rolled at 4. Singing and prayer by br. Ira Fisk, 15 m after first bell. Delayed by cattle strayed or left over river last night. Moved at 9 a.m. Nooned on hill side, over Platte—high wind, having trav. 7 m. Camped in sight old Upper Platte bridge. Day's trav. about 16 m. Eve. prayer by br. Dallin.

Wednesday, 17.

Camp called at 4 a.m. After official examination of river; it was resolved to repair the dilapidated concern <and cross on it> which was done, causing some delay. Road up heavy sandy hill—doubled teams. Traveled about a mile above new Up[per]. Platte Bridge and camped <about 2 p.m.> for day. Day's journey about 6 m. Some repairing. Eve. Prayer by br H[orace]. Stannard.

Thursday, 18th Sept.

Friday, Sept. 19:

Camp called at 3 a.m. designing to leave about sunrise: Cattle drove into corral—some 50 head missing, which, not being found at 7½ a.m. some of herd turned out again. Hampton and Bates bros. in same stream, also lost stock. Windy. About noon, stock found from 5 to 7 m from camp westward. Rolled on about 12.30. Camped on Greasewood creek. Day's travel, 13 m. Saturday, Sept. 20:

Camp arose at leisure. Ox-shoeing. Fine day. Prayer and start at late hour. Nooned near Sweet Water: Af. storm. at 5.20 P.M. Rolled on 2½ m. ½ m above Ind. Rock and camped in dark. Eve. Prayer by br. Dallin. Remarks by Capt. Wm Dallin <&>Forsyth, Chaplain and br. Butler. Resolved to start camp at appointed hour.

Sunday, Sept. 21.

Camp called by bell at 3½ a.m. Prayer, about 4 by br Sam'l Blackham. Cattle move into corral at ¼ 6. Camp rolling at 6.30. Nooned about 2½ m above Devil's Gate, where we camped. Eve. Singing and prayer by br J. Taylor. Day's travel 7 m.

Monday, Sept. 22.

Camp called at 4 a.m. Singing and prayer by br Wagstaff at 4½. Three head missing, which delayed starting till near 8 a.m. Nooned at bend of Sweet Water 8 m travel. Camped at foot of bluff on river. Eve: Singing and prayer by br. Forsyth. Day's travel 16 m.

Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Camp calleld at 5 a.m. Prayer by Capt. at 5½. Nooned on Sweet Water, after traveling 7 mi. About 4 p.m. moved out [-] m to Sweet Water <and camped> in dark. Eve: Singing, and prayer by br. Brown, brother-in-law of Capt. late from Ogden, Deseret: Day's travel 13 m.

Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Camp (by error in time-piece) called at 3 a.m. Singing and prayer at 5. by br. Minkler. Rolled out about 7. Nooned 8¾ m, near; or ½ mi from river. <Cattle shoeing. About 18 m to main camp midway.> About 4 P.m. Drove on 8 m and made dry camp <at 9½ P.m.> corralling animals. Singing and prayer by br. Merrick.

Thursday Sept 25.

Camp roused at daylight when at once began yoking up and by 5, under motion. Breakfasted, about 10 min after traveling 8 or 10 m, on Sweet Water, just below ford No. 5. Camped at old "ford to avoid heavy sand", 3½ m further. Day's travel, 15 m. Straggling members of 6th Ohio Cav. sent out to "quell Indian disturbances," frequently met bodies of 30 or more distributed along at different stations. Eve. Singing and prayer by Chaplain. W. C. Neal, gentile merchant, having refused to pay the amount assessed on his mules (his riding horse not taxed at all) the matter was presented before the meeting, when, after some talk, a poor peddler <not really a camp member> ([blank space] Perkins) offered to pay it for him, which sufficed for so small an affair. Friday, Sept. 26.

Camp awakened at leisure. Singing and prayer by br. Butler. About 2½ P.M. went on 5 1/4 m and camped where road leaves river to ascend to "Rocky Ridges". Good place. Eve: Singing and prayer by br. Dixon. Remarks by brs. Minkler and Dallin. Benediction by Chaplain.

Saturday, Sept. 27.

Camp called at 5 a.m. Ox-shoeing. Moved out about 9. Camped on Strawberry creek. Day's travel 10 m.

Sunday, Sept 28.

Traveled about 24 miles and camped at Pacific Springs.

Monday. 29.

Took left hand road—not much traveled. Camped on a slough <in vicinity of Dry Sandy> about dark. But little feed.

Tuesday. 30.

Camped on Big Sandy.

Crossed and camped on west side Green river, having traveled some 18 miles.

Thursday, Oct. 2.

Camped on Black's Fork, after a journey of some 17 m.

Camp went up thro Silver creek Kanyon and camped near Wm Kimball's.

Delayed by loss of cattle. Camped about a mile below the "summit."
