Some gentlemen and ladies came into our car and we had a nice time—singing, speaking, etc. I was called upon and said that 41 years [ago] I was crossing this very ground driving oxen. It was a different mode of travel from the one we were now enjoying. The Indians were hostile and one day we had to bury a number (11) men killed by them. The night before I was on guard. I related how I made him walk (one of the emigrants a lazy fellow) all night. Next day seeing what the Indians had done he apologized to me saying he thought I had made him walk more than necessary but now he saw I knew more than he did about it.
