Transcript for May, James, Reminiscences [ca. 1864-1888], 12-13

About the first of July we started for the ferry on the Big River where My little Brother [William May] died

on the 2nd Crossed the River where my poor Mother [Hannah Hobson May] died and was Buried without a coffin

on the 4th the camp started for the Elk horn River in what is now Nebraskie [Nebraska] state

Now there was 4 of us orphan children started in E[li] B Kelseys company for Utah. J Y [sic] a journey of 1036 miles. the most of the distence i walked driving a team of 2 yoke of oxen and 2 yoke of cows. that was along tiresome journey long to be remembered[.] it took us 3 1/2 months[.] we arived in Salt Lane [Lake] city Oct 14 1852[.] some members of the company was taken with the Cholra in Nebraskie [Nebraska] and one or 2 died[.] Bro H[enry] Ballard drove sheep across the plains
