Transcript for Melville, Alexander, [Autobiographical sketch], in Pioneer Pathways [1998- ], 6:187

After two more years, we started to come to the valleys of the mountains. We crossed the Missouri River on July 5, 1852, and arrived in Salt Lake City in October having been over three months crossing the plains with our team of oxen and [our] cows. The milk was often churned to butter by night. We were in Orson Hyde’s Company with Henry Miller as Captain.

Our oldest living child, James Andrew Melville, was just three weeks old when we started. The mother [Jane Ann Dutson Melville] and grandmother [Ann Green Dutson Carling] carried him in a clothes basket nearly all the way.
