The family moved to Council Bluffs in the spring of 1847 and remained until 1850 when they started across the plains.  We had two wagons drawn by oxen and cows, we also had some sheep but most of the were lost on the way.  With eight small children to care for it was no pleasure trip for my mother.  Belle Hawzell and old friend from our home town in the Isle of Man, traveled with us; she carried my brother Joseph E. who was then a baby most of the way across the plains, allowing mother time to look after me.
