[page 1] 13th June 1877. A Sketh of C.D. Brinton’s Mission to the United States A sketch from my journal Kept while on a mission to United States I was called at general Conference October 9th 1876 Ordained a Sevety and set apart for Mission Monday 10th October 1876 I was appointed to the District of Penna Deleware & Jersey I started from Salt Lake City Wednesday Nov- 1st 7 Oclock A.M. in Company with Bro Henry Grow SL City & James Straw from Springhill. Ma arrived at Philadephia Nov 6 I visited the Centennial Exebi tion till it closed on the 10 [page 2] I then visited Relativs and friends in Philadelphia and Chester County till Nov 22nd I then in company with Bro H Grow & John Groesbeck started to Pottsville Schuylkill Co Penna Arived at Pottsville 12.45 P.M. of 22nd We met Bro Lorus Pratt at Depot who had been laboring in that vacinity for some time. He took us to Bro John Edwards’ house a family of good faithful Saints. We held meeting in his house that night Some 12 or 15 persons present I spoke some 5 or 10 minutes Bore my testimony to the truth of the Gospel and spoke of my determination in faithfu-lly doing my best to warn the inhabitance where in my lot might he cast of the Wrath of God that would shortly be found out up on the wicked From 22nd to 25 I Studied Scripture all [page 3] my leasure time. Saturday Eavning 25 we walked to Cressona Dis. 4 ½ miles and held Meeting in the house of John Hughs had a full house and good order & attention paid I was I labored in Schuylkill, Carbon, Lehi, Berks, & Chester, Counties from the 22nd Nov till the 23rd of May 1877 under the direction and Council of Bro S Grow who was appointed to Preside ofver the Penna Delleware & Jersey District of the W.S. Mission I traveled on foot and by Rail a great deal of my time Preaching in all towns and Villages that I could eather get School Houses or Private Houses The Prejudice of the people in some places was so strong that a Mormon Elder could not get permission to preach at all I hired halls several times But my means were so limited [page 4] that I could not hire very extencivly I Baptized In Cressona Schuylkill Co Cathorine Sheriff Harriett S. Reed, John Albert Reed, And Cathorine Reed, I Baptized in Summit Hill Carbon County Margrett Davis Lewis Thomas & Cathorine L Swartz and Organized a Branch of the Church at Summit Hill Carbon Co and Ordained and set apart Bro John Edwards Neath to Preside over the Summit Hill Branch I also Organized a Branch at Cressona And appointed Bro David Edwards to preside I preached 70 times to Congraga =tions large and Small I enjoyed the Spirit of My Mission and the Blessings of God in all my travels I was released from my Mission by Bro Grow June the 1st to return home at my leasure I Started hom from Phila June the 6th Arived at Salt Lake City June 15th C.D.
