Transcript for Nathan Clayson, Biographical information relating to Mormon pioneer overland travel database, 2003-2017

At the age of sixteen, on June 3, 1864, Nathan sailed from England to America on the ship Hudson. They were on the ocean forty six days and landed at Castle Garden, New York on July 19, 1864. They then took a train to Florence, Nebraska. En route, Nathan was detained a lot on account of the Civil War. When he got to Florence he met Alexander Sutherland, who had been a traveling Elder in the L.D.S Conference in which the Clayson family had lived. He engaged Nathan to go with him and drive three yoke of cattle in a freight train across the plains and mountains to Utah. They had delays and so they arrived very late in Wyoming, Nebraska, a village seven miles north of Nebraska City, Nebraska, on August 2, 1864. There was much snow and Nathan got his feet badly frozen and the last few days had to ride in the wagon. They arrived in Salt Lake City December 3, 1864. A kindly disposed man took him to his home for a few days. Alex Sutherland had paid him $10.00 for driving the three yoke freight team from Florence to Salt Lake City, Utah. He bought a few apples, and a stage coach ticket to Payson, where his brothers William and Thomas, and his sister Emma were living. He had 25 cents of his $10.00 left. He made his home with his brother William and family.
