From there [Omaha, Nebraska] we walked across the plains to Salt Lake City. We came in Captain Peter Nebakers [Nebekers] company. I remember gathering dried buffalo chips to burn. Also there was a very stubborn woman who couldn't get along with her husband. She used to tell him she would rather live with the Indians than try to get along with him. One day some Indians did capture her and took her away. There was nothing the husband could do but keep up with the company and he never did hear from her or find out what became of her.

When we arrived in Salt Lake City in October 1866 we had nowhere to go and did not know the English language.
