In this history by great-granddaughter, Vera Bisel Brown, is a statement directly by Peter Duncan:

I was baptized on the 10th day of March 1849 in Hunterfield Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Elder Henry McCuen, President of the Edinburgh conference, and confirmed same day by Elder David Moffit.  I was ordained a deacon by my father in year 1855, in about 3 years was made a teacher.  We left Scotland for America on 19th of April 1861, sailed from Liverpool, England.  In 28 days landed at Castle Gardens and went by railroad steamlet to Florence, Nebraska, and crossed the plains in Captain Joseph Hern’s [Horne's] train, and arrived in Salt Lake City.
