. . . on the last day of Febry 1846 I crossed the Mississippi on the Ice in company with many others who had been driven from their homes & firesides by the Mob, for a place as then unknown to us and after traveling through Snow[,] deep mud & water for 3 months we arrived at a place named by our leaders ‘Garden Grove,’ where my Wife Died on the 17^th, of June having been sick over twelve months, soon after this I was taken sick with fever & ague which confined me to the house the remain[d]er of the year

In June of the following year [1847] I left garden Grove for winter Quarters, where I remained until April of the following Spring [1848], when I married my second Wife Jane Amanda Stevens, daughter of Samuel C and Minerva Althea Field, and left for Great Salt Lake City where I arrived in September of the same year- - -
