At this place I was appointed Captain over the second ox train coming across the plains in 1861. There were thirty-three wagons and four carriages in the company, most of the Saints coming from St. Louis. We had a prosperous journey to Utah—no deaths, one birth, no loss of cattle—

and we arrived in Utah, September 5th. Brigham Young asked me how we traveled. After I told him he said I had done just right.
