In the spring of 1856 [1853] he left England for the United States, arriving at New Orleans on the ship, "Camilla." From Council Bluffs he started across the plains in the company of John Brown, who was among the first pioneers to enter Salt Lake valley. After traveling in Captain Brown's company for a short distance, Mr. Powell, then 21 years of age, was employed by Levi and Jack Stewart, merchants, to drive a team to Salt Lake.
