On the fourth of June (1863) father, mother, and six children beside me left England for America. My oldest brother was in the army when we left, but he came to the Valley a year later. I spent my twenty-second birthday on the plains. We arrived in Salt Lake on the fourth of October 1863. I traveled part way across the plains on a thrashing machine.
