Remarkable Events Connected with Ruth Tanner as a Young Proselyting/ Administrator Missionary and Later Faith Promoting Experiences

On February 9, 1921, when I was 22 years old I left for the California Mission. When I left I had been on the Stake Board 4 years. The old ward Primary group had a big party for us and gave me a combination scriptures and had a big ward dance.

President Ivans gave me a wonderful blessing. He stated that Satan would attempt to destroy me and that I would have power to rebuke him.

In the mission home in Los Angeles I met Joseph W. McMurrin, President of the mission. I have never met a man with a stronger testimony. I spent 2 weeks in Mission Headquarters and then went to Bakersfield with Margaret Gardner as a companion. She has been one the great influences in my life. She played the piano, sang, and was a quiet person – a peacemaker. Bakersfield needed such a person as they were split in two over disagreements. It was a wonderful experience working with her. She insisted on study – planning, etc. She could visit the people and clear up the difficulties. She led the singing. I played the piano. Elder Miller from near Manti was also there and was a very spiritual person as was Margaret. He worked there until July when it became too hot. From there we went to Paso Robles until October.
