Emigrated to America, in the year of our Lord 1856. Left Liverpool Tuesday May 20th 1856 with Father, Mother and Sister Eliza Persis. Sailed on the ship Horizon, (Sailing vessell.) Landed at the City of Boston, Mass. after a voyage of about thirty-five days. From there took the cars to Iowa City. From Iowa City started across the Plains in brother Edward Martin's Hand Cart train; having traveled about one hundred miles, through my father's illness we stopped at a small town called Newton.

The next Spring we moved <to> Des Moines City about 35 miles west where we lived till the Spring of 1861 when we emigrated to Utah, in Joseph Youngs train. We were about ten weeks on the Plains.
