I went to Council Bluffs and in the year A.D. 1847, I started with the pioneers from Winter Quarters for the Vallies of the Mountains. This being the first Company that every travelled the North Side of the Platte. We made the road, killed the Snakes and in so doing opened the way for the gathering of Israel to the place God had appointed in the tops of the mountains. When we arrived at Cave Rock, President Brigham Young and many others were taken sick; but they told us to go ahead and when we got into the Valley we were not to turn South but to go North and stop at the Creek. (which is now known as City Creek).
