Transcript for Samuel Miles autobiography, circa 1904, 13

The time had now come July 1848 for the brethren to start for the Salt Lake Valley. Most of them had done well in washing out the gold from the river sands, most of them being near the spot of the discovery. I was able to make a good fit for the return home. A company with teams proceeded our pack company across the mountains. A new road by the Carson River route was made, our pack company overtaking them and assisting them. Our company numbered about fifty mostly those who had returned after meeting Capt. Brown the previous season.

We arrived at the fort in the Salt Lake Valley on the 10th of Sept. 1848.
