Father bought two yoke of oxen, a wagon, a tent, and provisions in Florence, Missouri, to last us to Salt Lake City. We had to walk a good deal of the way across the plains, but had a successful trip.

When we arrived in Salt Lake City, we found our dear grandmother [Catherine Jones Bennett] had died while she was crossing the plains, about 100 miles from Utah. We went directly to Fillmore in October. We were taken into the homes of John Bowen, Charles Wood, and Nicholas Paul, who had crossed the plains with our grandfather [John Bennett] three years before.
