"Getting ready to cross the plains was new to me, and I did not know what to bring with us. I could have brought a few needles and cotton, a few knives and forks, tin cups and plates. Many of these little things would have made it much better for us; but no one told me. My brother loaned my husband one ox and one cow to drive. Although I was in a delicate condition, I walked most of the way.

"We made our beds on the ground at night and I caught a cold that settled in my ears and made me quite deaf permanently, which was a great sorrow to me."
