April 23 rd , 1861 My husband, baby and I left all that we held dear in our Native land and crossed the Ocean on the ship Underwriter to come to America for the Gospel sake.

We arrived at New York May 22nd and at Florance [Florence], Nebraska "Now known as Winter Quarters" June 2nd[.] We stayed here until June 30th 1861. the Ox teams having arrived from Salt Lake City, Utah. we continued our journey to that place.

It was now that our trials began, for it was slow traveling, some days only going five miles, cooking by the camp fire, sleeping on the ground and being frightened by the red men made our journey hard for us. The Captain of our Company, Ira Eldredge, was very kind to us and had the mothers with babies ride all the way, but my husband walked every mile of the road.

We arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah. Sept. 15, 1861.
