we made a speedy and safe trip to Florence where we arrived on the 20 th of June, and owing to the non-arrival of the emigrants we were compelled to remain until the 6th day of August. I do not remember as I ever experienced a grander sight or felt a greater pleasure than when we broke camp from Florence and started on our return trip to the mountains with between three hundred and four hundred saints, our teams fat and lively, having good pasturage during our stay, and the Saints in joyfull anticipation of arriving in the vallies there long looked for haven or rest and retreat from bondage and tyranny. We arrived in Salt Lake City October 3, 1863 after a very pleasant journey.
