Transcript for Charles Turner journals, 1854-1910

July 1 [1861] Mon. got B[reakfas]t[.] packed up & got ready to move on[.] we then shifted about 1 Mile[.] got Wood & Warter & helped to get all straight[.] then Did some writing to Br. Cowper & Black[.] our Camp is in the midst of the hills[.] got to Bed late[.] A & fine night.

2 Tu. got up & got Bt. then set on to right [write] all the time I had on hand[.] finished my letters to Br. Cowper & Black. took Tea then went up into the Brush[.] prayed. Got A <little> wood[.] returned to Camp[.] got warter[.] had a little Talk with Sister [Ann] Stormont. Attended meeting[.] heard Br Aldridge speak upon Travling on

3 Wed. fine Morning[.] Sis. [Elizabeth] Cowper & Stormant in to Florance [Florence] after Bt. Cut wood & got my pants Mended[.] took D[inne]r. Brs Jeffery[,] Reed[,] E[lias] L[acy] T[homas] Harrison[,] S[iste]r. Jeffery came along[.] Br L Nair & Family are in this company[.] left Camp about miday[.] traveled to the big distance 6 M. A Fine Countrey for [illegible ] Farming[.] good camp found but wood warter scant. The Sisters <are> Tired[.] Attended prayer Meeting

4 Thur. got some wood & worked around all day[.] Dancing &c by the Saints & had A game in the afternoon[.] this is the Day Cilabrated by the Americans as the day of their independence[.] still feel well in my relig[i]on but rather unsettled in <mind>

5 Fri. got Bt. after which our coreal [corral] was shifted A few yards[.] got wood & warter [water] and worked about all Day[.] went over to the well in the afternoon Accompanied by Sisters Cowper & Stormant[.] Sister E Wilkins vary unwell. Attended prayer Meeting after which I took A walk with Sr. Cowper & got her mind as to me

6 Sat. she got wood warter & worked about all day[.] still rejoice in my religonn [religion] but feel rather unsettled in my mind upon some things about my Sisters[.] very heavey Thunder & rain this afternoon but we all kept Dry but several got wet[.] <dry in [To..] Tent[.] [-] under the Waggon>

7 Sun. after Bt. Our Camp was shifted A short Distance just to Change the ground[.] got wood & warter[.] then took A rest. Attended Meeting both afternoon & Evening[.] thunder in the Distance[.] cut A trench round the tent which made me sweet [sweat] very much[.] It then come on rain but not much Lay in Br. Reid [Reed] Tent.

8 Mon. Morning got wood Warter & helped to make the Sisters Comfortable[.] waded the creak for some wood[.] Sisters Stormont & Cowper did some washing[.] afternoon took A walk round the Camp & had A little talk to many of my old Aquintance[.] Sister [Ann] Kipling is very ill[.] Sister Wilkins <much> better

9 Tu. This Morning sister kipling died at Day break, we got ready & started about 6 A.M. for Elkhorn[.] arrived about miday[.] Distance 12 Miles[.] good place for wood but river warter[.] some Sisters much [ingu.e.] by eateing frog stoals[.] rather tired to day[.] got wood & warter[.] then had a rest after which I prepared for Morning[.] had a baith [bath]

10 Wed. got wood[.] spent A short time with Willet harder in the grove[.] made some tent[.] got Dinner[.] spent the afternoon about the tent & geting wood & warter[.] John Reading came up from Capn. Horn[e] Camp[.] <Sr Stormant> went down at Night[.] I still feel well in the work but my mind a little uneasy. Capn. Aldredge [Ira Eldredge] came up to [-]

11 Thur. got some wood & Etc[.] pack with us [.] had Bt. packed up[.] then we started[.] I drove the Team[.] We Travled 3 Miles to [blank space.] but little wood & stagnant warter arived about 9 A.M. got A little wood[.] took Dinner[.] Administred to Br. Moss little son Wm. In connection with Br. J[ohn] Cook[.] spent the afternoon A part with J Nair[,] A part with the [gua…..] A part with my [-] A child died at night

12 Fri. got up & got warter & took Bt[.] helped in what was to do[.] rote A little[.] took Dinner[,] after which I took A short walk with Sisters Cowper & Stormant[.] spent the hole day in Camp[.] A few games in the Evening[.] still love my relig[i]on <but Still A little> unsettled

13 Sat. go to A bake baka took Bt. Packed up &c[.] 12 Miles[,] 3 Miles this side Free Mont [Fremont.] got in about Midday[.] Capting [Captain] Jorn A [John R.] Murdock Train past us to Day[.] Murdock out of Flower all but 3 Days[.] we Meet 2 Teams goeing to the States because of the fire of Zion[.] All well to Day[.] many old Aquintances past [passed]

14 Sun. Got Bake [back] Cattle[.] took Bt[.] packed up one Davis[,] Wife[,] 3 Children[.] went back with A Waggon[.] we started & droped in with Br. Eresteas [Erastus] Snow who preached to us A short time[.] Traveled 11 Miles[.] took Dr. then started Again & was caught into heavey Thunder Storm & got A soking[.] Went 6 Miles to plenty of wood & wartre[.] my [-] very weet [wet.] slept in them

15 Mon. got Bt. then Travled 11 Miles[.] took Dr. then T[ravele]d 7 M[.] plentey of wood & warter on the Bank of Lupfork [Loup Fork.] this [h]as been A good Days Travel[.] fine land &c[.] A few houses here & their[.] A fine Day & all goes well to Day

16 Tu. Help prepair for Bt. took the same then Travled 8 Miles[.] took Dr. after which we Travled to loopfork [Loup Fork] Ferey [Ferry.] Crossed over to the other side & herded the Oxen while all crossed over to loopfork. Got some warter & wood & helped to prepair Sup[p]er[.] A fine Day[.] <meet 10 Waggons going back> to the States from Utah

17 Wed. helped to get reddy for Starting[.] as usual took Bt. & Started[.] Travled 9 Miles[.] took Dr. then Travled 10 Miles & Camped for the Night[.] all pretty Tired[.] A fine Day[.] beautiful Cuntrey[.] fine Land[.] plenty of Warter but not much Wood

18 Thur. got ready as usual then started[.] Travled 14 Miles in 6½ hours[.] took Dr. then Travled 6 Miles & Camped for the Night after which it come on heavey Thunder & rain & strong wind[.] the Day fine[.] no wood here without crossing the plat[te]

19 Fri. Got ready & started with very Weet [wet] trousers Bottoms[.] Travled 9 Miles, took Dr. then Travled 7 Miles to[.] A plenty of Wood Warter [water] far A way[.] took Supper[.] after prayers assisted to Administer to Samuel Pruel [blank space] who has been Sick ever since we left Florance[.] A fine Dr. Brs. Cook and Aldridge spoke upon the Teamsters & young Men & Rideing[.] A good Meeting[.] Bro Williams felt bad at Night on account of the Sisters gaffing him A little[.] Stripped & Slept in the Waggon

20 Sat. Dan[i]el [blank space] [Collard] Died[.] A quarter past 2 A.M. got Bt. Then started[.] Travled 12 Miles[.] Captin horn Company in site all Morning[.] plenty of Wood & Warter here[.] A good Number of our Companey Travling this M[ornin]g[.] our folks all started & walked till I over took them[.] hevey rain while takeing Dr. after it cleared we traveled 4 miles to wood river most of the way in the rain. crossed over & camped on the Bank[.] got very weet

21 Sun. rained Most of Night[.] this M[ornin]g arose put on my weet pants[.] over halled the Waggon[.] took Bt. Packed up & Travled [blank space] M[orning] T[raveled] 12 [miles,] H[ours] 4¼. A[fternoon] T[raveled] H[ours] T[raveled] None

28 Sun. took Bt. then travled through A Sandy part 9 Miles[.] Nooned on the plat[te.] Afternoon travled 7 Miles[.] & Camped on the plat the land is not so good as it [h]as been[.] we travled A part of the way by the front of the bluffs[.] the day prety hot[.] lost my knif[e.] had a good Meeting at Night […nk] River[.] <burnt chips>

29 Mon. got ready[.] took Bt. Then started & travled A good distance[.] road sandy[.] very hot to Day & we all got thurstey [thirsty.] past A fine spring wear we got A rich Treat[.] then travled on[.] Corealed [corralled] on the plat[te.] T[ravele]d 9 Miles Morning[,] 7 Afternoon[.] walked with the Sisters & had a pleasant Day[.] <good> good [-] <burnt chips>

30 Tu. help bake & get Ready Bt[.] took it & Travled off early[.] road good & the Day very hot[.] walked with my brethren & Sisters but Most of the [time] with the Sisters[.] had A fine & good Day[.] feelings good & all things moveing well & good Meeting at Night & a prierey little & head of us travled by side of the plat[te] all Day[.] Morning Travled 10 Miles A[fternoo]n 8[.] Corealed & Camped on the plat[.] <Chips for fire>

Kimbles[.] Made A Settlement for our trip across the plaines[.] my bill is 185 Dollers over wait [weight] Luggage[,] 20 Cents per lb. we Straightened up our luggage &c and Spent the Day in getting ready to enter the City[.] in the evening held A meeting in which a young Eldridge Musser & others Spoke

14 Sat. Sharp frost this Morning[.] to Day crost over the Summit & Camped at the foot of the little Mountain[.] staid here all afternoon & over Night[.] here Brs. came to see us[.] the Saints injoyed themselves in the Dance

15 Sun. frosty Morning[.] took Bt. then set out for the City[.] got in from three to four O clock[.] Meet with some old frends[.] See all My Company off to there different resting places then came to Br. T. Maycock[.] took Supper & Staid over Night
