Washington Washington Co. Utah To Bro Wilford Woodruff Church Historian Dear Brother I feel impressed to forward to you a few items in relation to my late Mission to England. I left S.L. City in Company with Eleven other Missionaries on the 19th of October 1879, we arrived in Liverpool on the 7th of Nov 1879 after a pleasant voyage of 10 days. I was assigned to labor in the Liverpool Conference, under the direction of Prest J.L. Bunting Elder J.W. Vickers of Nephi was appointed to travel with me in the Wigan district, of Said Conference, where we laboured together about 10 months, under a variety of circumstances, all things considered we had much joy in our labors. we laboured in unison and became strongly attached to each other. During our labor together, a very Striking Circumstance circumstan took place, we were impressed to travel in a certain direction, yielding to the Page 2 impression, we started out in direction Suggested by the good Spirit. The place & people were entirely Strange to us. But to our great Surprise we found a people prepared to receive us gladly, After a little labour with them 12 adults presented themselves as candidates for baptism. A Branch was organized out of this new material, & others were shortly after added by baptism, untill it became a flourishing branch of the Church. Known as the Ashton Branch about 4 miles distant from Wigan. The establishment of this branch greatly increased the accomodations of the travelling Elders in that vicinity, as the people were very poor, there were 42 baptisms in that district during our labors there. As a rule the people were very bitter & much predjudiced, notwithstanding through courtesy & the Spirit of kindness we Succeeded in making many friends although our labours were located in a very wicked & Corrupt portion of the Country Page 3 My travelling Companion was then removed to the runcorn district, were himself & W.R. Jones of SL. City Commenced distributing tracts in the Town of Warrington where the Gospel had not been preached for Some twenty five years or more after about two months Seperation I was assigned to labor in the Runcorn district with my former Companion Elder J.W. Vickers, we conti- =nued to distribute tracts in the town of Warring- =ton paying our own expences to a great extent untill we finally Succeeded in obtaining Some places to hold Meetings. The result of which was that finally organized a Branch of the church there & Secured the friendship & hospitality of many who were not members of the church. Many of them made application to have their children blessed according to the order of our Church among our friends were Some Methodists and Catholics. I was labouring by myself most of the time when the baptisms & Organization of the Branch took place at Warrington Oct. 19, 1879 Nov. 11, 1881. R.F. Goolds’ Mission to England. We were violently assaulted by a reckless Mob led on by the following persons. James Cousin Carpenter, James Dulton Market Inspector, Samuel Yarwood Cab proprietor, & Matthew Sweetman Coal proprietor, they followed us with threats & imprecations to our abode & then requested that we should be brought forth to them. The first named of those leaders, has annoyed our brethren for many years past, & in my hearing has declared that he will never cease as long as he has a breath to draw.
