We crossed the Mississippi at New Orleans, and went by rail to St. Louis or St. Joseph, I forget which place we took the steam boat, up the Mississippi River to Florence, Nebraska. We arrived in Salt Lake City 15 September 1861. We came through Parley’s Canyon and I, my sister Agatha, our father David Morgan and two other men walked from Parley’s Park, a distance of thirty-five miles that day. We started at sunrise before the wagon train did. Captain Eldredge told us to go to his home in Sugar House Ward and tell his forks [folks] to give us some bread and milk which we did. Oh how good it tasted after that walk! How we did eat!!!
